* “Penmanship has always fascinated me. As a kid, I used to get a kick out of copying my friends’ handwriting because there were features about it that intrigued me...”

The daughter of an international civil servant, Benedicte Gerin was born in New York and spent her childhood living in diverse cultural settings such as Lebanon, Thailand, Cyprus, and southeast England (Kent). It was at the age of 1 8 that she arrived in Paris where she took up the study of graphic arts and gained her first professional experiences in advertising and by working as a photo editor for the press.

She started taking calligraphy classes 14 years ago, and has been perfecting the art of letter-ing ever since. When her stepfather one day introduced her quite spontaneously, if not by accident, to the world of watercolors, a special artistic fusion began to emerge in Benedicte’s work. “The special constraints of painting in watercolors, namely the impossibility of any second chance to execute the gesture ‘better’ than the first time, have allowed my calligraphy to evolve towards a more personal form of expression. As I began to merge the two techniques, the results broke away from the pure logic of calligraphy, and yet it is still an unalloyed gesture of writing that drives my artistic mind and eye, guiding the inspired movement of hand and arm! In a way, one could say that I ‘unlearned’ the pursuit of mastery, preferring to abandon myself to the joy of letting go.”

Sensitivity and strength came together in a most spectacular fashion to produce works in which Benedict&s talent thrives!

Over 150 world-class events will feature artists from across Australia and the world will be performing and exhibiting for the duration of the French Rendezvous as part of the largest French cultural festival ever held in Australia. So if you want to feel French for a while you can catch a concert, see a circus, walk amongst street performers, be dazzled by visual spectacles, celebrate Australia’s French past, enjoy an array of exhibitions  and stroll through Left Bank antique and collectable markets in each city.

Australia's six capital cities will be buzzing day and night across city locations, parks, music venues, art galleries, at cinemas and right across the CBD's.
