PLANTU - Famed French political caricaturist
France’s most renowned political caricaturist, Jean Plantureux, better known as Plantu, will visit Sydney from the 5 of July in order to present Lunch at the Alliance Française on Friday 6 July at 12.30 and a Lecture and Exhibition at the COFA (UNSW) from 5.45 pm to 8.15 pm with a drink. On the 5 July, Plantu will discuss the boundaries that political caricatures defy.

Plantu will compare the frontiers that cannot be crossed by caricaturists in either France or Australia. Throughout the conference, Plantu will draw cartoons, which will be shown to the audience on overhead projectors, to provide those attending with physical examples of points made during their discussions.

This lunch will provide Plantu with the opportunity to talk about the journalistic circle and the French media with regard to cartoons. Plantu is highly interested in the “politically correct” movement in Europe which has, according to him, paralysed the media. At his two public appearances, he will explain how European caricaturists and columnists have become the last line of defence against it.

This will give the Australian public the opportunity to view the visiting caricaturist’s work and it will offer them insight into a French perspective of current international and national issues relevant to both countries. Plantu’s trip to Australia and his exhibition have been made possible through CulturesFrance and the Alliance Française en l'Australie, a non-profit organisation that promotes the French language and culture overseas, in partnership with Australian Institutions.
